Choose a unit and its equipment

Back to the guide contents

Before creating characters, choose the unit they will represent. Its organization and the mission’s historical period determine the personnel roles, weapons, and equipment you need. The Green Berets in the Triad Shooting Star mission provide an example of these choices.

Arma is close to a combat simulator. Before choosing uniforms and weapons, establish the period, service branch, and specific unit. Authenticity matters on the Triad Tactics server and in other projects too.

A unit’s organization and establishment define its subunits, chain of command, and personnel roles. These determine which prefabs you need: commanders, riflemen, machine gunners, medics, and communications specialists.

On the Triad Tactics server, the usual scale is company versus company; a side may also represent several platoons. An infantry company’s command chain looks like this:

  • Company HQ
    • Platoon HQ
      • Squad
A simplified infantry company command chain; platoon and squad numbers depend on its establishment.

In this guide, we are creating character prefabs for the Triad Shooting Star mission addon. One side in this mission represents the Green Berets — US Army Special Forces. Their equivalent of an infantry company consists of a headquarters and six ODAs (Operational Detachments Alpha, also called A-Teams). There are no platoons in this structure: ODAs report directly to company headquarters.

  • Company HQ
    • ODA · A-Team
      • Split A · Alpha
      • Split B · Bravo
    • The company’s other ODAs
Special Forces company structure: no Platoon HQ between Company HQ and an ODA.

A standard ODA has 12 members: its leadership and specialists in weapons, engineering, medicine, and communications.

In our example, Company HQ has two members: the company commander and executive officer. The following diagram shows an ODA divided into two six-person halves — Split A and Split B:

  • ODA · 12 members
    • Split A · Alpha · 6 members
      • Detachment Commander
      • Operations Sergeant
      • Weapons Sergeant
      • Engineer Sergeant
      • Medical Sergeant
      • Communications Sergeant
    • Split B · Bravo · 6 members
      • Assistant Detachment Commander
      • Intelligence Sergeant
      • Weapons Sergeant
      • Engineer Sergeant
      • Medical Sergeant
      • Communications Sergeant
ODA personnel roles divided between Split A and Split B in our example.

Prepare character prefabs for the roles you have chosen, with suitable equipment for the commander, medic, and other specialists.

We cannot reproduce every detail in the game, but should preserve the unit’s roles, command structure, and equipment.
